[newbie] Sound card recommendations?

I'm tired of Linux freezing up when I play sound using my Aureal
Storm Platinum and I want to replace it.

What would you recommend as a replacement ?  It has to be at least
as fully featured as the Aureal Vortex 2, and _fully_ compatible with
Mandrake.

Any suggestions?
