i'll look into that.  i kinda figure something like this would be built right in to 
linux, i just had no idea where to look for it.

as to my choice of com ports - i could network, but it's not worth the memory use and 
time to figure out as i want each box as a total stand alone, and i could use the 
parallel ports as you suggest, but....  yes i am sooooo lazy, to do that i would have 
to *gasp* up plug the printer.  oh my, the stress.  =)  like i said, i'm really lazy, 
and quite honestly how long it takes to transfer the files is not important.  my com 
ports are unused, that's why i would just as soon use them.

why you need a program?  you can use linux to creat a linux "dialup" serial
connection..."slip" I think it is
try setting that up via drakeconf...

serial connections are very slow, if you can't user ethernet, a parallel
cable would be alot faster for transfering files then serial...
