Well, the best way is to get 8.0 as soon as it is released. I am not sure
the Agfa is supported, though--that would need to be checked. Some scanners
are windows-only machines.
As for telephone-answering software, see www.linmodems.org. Yes they make
software modems work under linux but they feel the best use of such devices
is automated telephony.
Fax software there is aplenty in the regular distro. You can either buy 7.2
now or wait a few weeks for 8.0 or download it as soon as it is released.
