Yes, SRPM should be just as good as recompiling from
other source.  Although, it may not be as easy if you
need to tweak the source (I'm ignorant).

To compile SRPM do the following:

rpm --rebuild some.file.src.rpm

That will build the binary .rpm that you are used to
and it will be placed in...uh... i think it's
/usr/local/RPM/RPMS/iX86

where X is 3,4,5, or 6 depending on your architecture.
 I don't remember the exact path and unfortunately, I
am in windows right now.  But it's something like
that.
