[newbie] writing to FAT (WinME)

Hello

I was trying to write some data onto a FAT partition under WinME but when I
start WinME it crashes first and I have to reboot. After rebooting I force
it to start in normal mode and only then do I get the desktop back. I can
see that the files I write are intact but I cannot understand the first time
crashing part.

Has anyone faced this problem or is that I have configured things wrong?
