[newbie] DNS and DSL problem: can only browse as root

Hi, I reinstalled Mandrake 8.0 this morning on my laptop.

I can connect to the internet using rp-pppoe (version 3), but looking up
names like http://www.google.com/linux only works as root.  As a normal
user, I can only browse using ip addresses.  This never happenned before and
I'm not sure what I may have done.  Anybody know how I can fix this?
