Sorry, that is a hardware problem. Call WD and exchange the
disk. Better yet, if you can afford it, buy a disk that has
some quality to start with, like IBM.
And it is just fine that the mainboard supports only UDMA33.
The WD disks do not do the 57 byte CRC required for higher
speeds properly and should never be used above UDMA2 (33).
If the mainboard supported UDMA5 (100) and your disk was 33, you
would do 33. If the mainboard supports 33 and your disk is 133,
you do 33. This is not improper; it works that way, and it is
designed to work that way.
The Seek errors are real and indicate a problem with your WD.
If it follows the pattern I have noticed with WDs, in a few
weeks, you will have a failure that requires a massive fsck to
repair the filesystem, then a few days later the drive will
physically break. and all data on it will be lost. This seek
error is usually a dangling head or bearing wear on the spindle.
You will find WDs warranty/returns department the most efficient
and friendly on the planet. That is scary to me, since I would
rather see them spending their money on a better quality product
than on fixing their customer's wounded temperaments when their
product breaks. But then they have the money and the company
and I am just a peon, so I guess that says what my opinion is
worth in this business world.
