Marcia,
Have you looked at the Configuration --> Other -->
Mandrake Control Panel and in there you can look at
what the settinfgs are for the display.. From what you
have said it appears that you display is set to
600x400 and that display is hard to see like you say.
Try 800x600 and see if that works better.
