Dan,
Log in as root and click on the Mandrake Control Center.
Select Boot->Boot Config. Under System Mode, select "Yes I want to
autologin as user
Another option is to start up Konqueror and select
etc/sysconfig/autologin. Right-click on the file and opne with a text
editor.
Ensure that it says:
autologin=yes
If you see autologin=no, change it to yes and resave the file. Next time
you reboot you will go directly to user.
In response to one of your freeze ups, uncheck kudzu during boot up.
This can also be found in Mandrake Control Center under Boot.
