I sure don't have all the answers, but I can shed what i believe may be a 
little lite. the "pretty blue loading screen" is called aurora, and is 
starting in "frame buffer"mode, not the same thing as an Xwindows Session. 
but first, can we make SURE that in Bios, "Plug and pray aware OS" is set to 
"off". next I am not Positive that the video card IS the problem,  (heck I 
ain't positive about what i will eat for dinner,) seems to me that the mouse 
might have a conflict. is your mouse a PS2? does that card need a IRQ? and 
what does the brackets mean anyway?
