Dennis....I've observed similar bahavior (also with a generic 
rtl8139 card) to that and also, in frustration, began to 
believe that it was a bad card.  But, what it actually turned 
out to be was a shared irq conflict, and moving it to another 
PCI slot fixed the problem immediately and permanently. :)
