Firstly, I _strongly_ suggest that you use Mozilla instead of Netscape 6.x.
Netscape 6.1 is Mozilla 0.9 with some advertising courtesy of AOL (who own
Netscape). Mozilla is currently at version 0.9.2, which is faster and less
buggy than Netscape 6.x (and probably always will be).
Installing Java requires root privileges. Run Netscape/Mozilla as root,
install Java, close it, and reopen it as an ordinary user. This is probably
the only time you should ever run Netscape/Mozilla as root (it is a security
risk).
