I've had this same problem as well. It appears to be an issue with VMware
2.0.4 and the Mandrake 2.4.3 kernel. If your apps don't require accurate time
keeping (most don't), then there is no harm in leaving things as they are. In
fact, the VMware documentation notes turning off access to /dev/rtc as a
method of improving VMware performance. The clock and menus may seem
sluggish, but everthing else should be a bit quicker.
