Thanks for the reply...

Ouch!

Your solution was just what I was trying to avoid.

I have several Linux boxes and I would like to be able to switch to any
one via the chooser at the initial (or) login screen, from any machine.

In 7.2 and before I was merely able to enable the chooser and select the
system I would log into.

Not so with 8.0 though. The same settings no longer work, nor does
adding the /etc/hosts.allow, permissions, etc. which may be getting in
the way.

Also Exceed does not find the remote chooser (though it does bring up
it's own...).

Thanks though.

Subject: Re: [newbie] Query: How to enable chooser in GDM, KDM, XDM
under 8.0?

I have been having significant problems with the chooser as well but
AFAIK:

Keep the Xaccess file like it is -- with that line -- i.e. the default
settings that come with mandrake.

I don't think gpm supports the chooser.

You basically need kdm or xdm to be running in the background as a
daemon. Then, typing X <displaynumber> -indirect <any X server on your
network> should make kdm or xdm bring up the chooser for you for that
display e.g. X :1 -indirect localhost

To bring up the chooser at startup, I guess, you will have to add the
line
"x:5:respawn:/usr/X11R6/bin/X :0 -indirect localhost" just before the
last
line of /etc/inittab (mandrake 7.2), "x:5:respawn:/etc/X11/prefdm
-nodaemon":

No warranties, though! I have given up trying this anyway!
