Just FYI... http://www.zdnet.com/zdnn/stories/news/0,4586,5096249,00.html If you can afford it and it suites your needs I would encourage you to support Ximian and purchase their products. It would be a shame to see them go under like Ezeal... Think of it as a donation?!? However, it seems you need a pretty powerful machine to run the GNOME desktop. I've got a 900MHz/512MB, and running GNOME is a dog compared to KDE, it's too bad really. I'm sure a lot has to do with having a slow hard-drive but I'm surprised how much disk access there is while running GNOME. Also, the whole .NET thing makes me shudder, I would hope that if Ximian (and other linux companies) attempt to "mimic" the MS service platform that they do it better and for the right reasons. MS is doing it badly and very much for the wrong reasons. There is some wagering going on here at work that MS will finally shoot themselves in the foot with the XP/.NET thing in about 2 years. It would be really nice to think that sometime in my career I could have a nice selection of linux companies to go work for and make a descent living instead of having to face the onslaught of windows companies looking for C# and COM programmers... Hopefully, when business consumers are faced with the XP/.NET alternative they will opt out of the MS slavery and seriously consider linux, possibly this will allow better office products to be built for linux and linux as a desktop will trickle down to the general consumers.
