Caveat - sometimes you'll find an RPM that depends on some other RPM which
depends in turn on some other RPM, and you can get into a circle sometimes -
and sometimes it's easier to build packages from source (but you usually
lose the packaging that RPM provides if you go that route).

Well, you can start with 'rpm -Uvh XFree-4.1.0-10.mdk.rpm' and it may
work, but it'll probably give a number of dependencies and conflicts; you
may need to group a lot of RPMS on the command line at the same time - for
example, 'rpm XFree-4.1.0-10.mdk.rpm XFree-other-4.1.0-10.mdk.rpm' etc. This
usually solves many catch-22 type dependency problems (package #1 depends on
package #2 which in turn depends on package #1).

Yeah - that's correct. But then you get later versions :).

There really isn't a standard. Generally, you have a 3 digit version code
(major, version, subversion) like 4.1.0. There is also another version
number (10 in the example) which is the particular RPMing version of the
original.

It's not the easiest thing in the world, but it can be done. Generally,
you'll need the various 2.2 KDE rpms, plus any dependencies, and you'll
need to adhere to installation order (kdesupport, then kdelibs, then
kdebase, then the rest of the stuff). I've been playing with and upgrading
kde since the beta3 days :) and I usually go with source, but I've done
some RPM upgrading as well.

You might not be aware, but there is a kde mailing list as well
