For lack of a better explanation, what you're doing with Outlook Express and Hotmail is IMAP. You're viewing the remote folders and the information in it. It may not be IMAP they're actually running, but in a way, that's what they're doing. You can do as the other people who responeded suggest, or you could just learn to use a console based program. So you can ssh to your machine, and then run something like Mutt, Pine, or Elm and read and reply to your email. If you didn't have a problem with could install your own web based mail front on your machine. Provided your machine always has the same IP address, and is up 24/7. (For example: DSL or Cable connection.) But you could install Horde/IMP and just check and send mail remotely via the web interface. But you don't seem to like that idea. Check out www.horde.org/.
