It sounds like you are using XFree86 4.0.x - I haven't tried StarOffice with the latest (4.1?) but I know it does not play well with 4.0.3, especially if you have an S3-based graphics card. I had to completely purge XFree86 4.0.3 and use Xfree86 3.3.6 instead. Works like a charm. StarOffice 6 is supposed to be out by the end of the year and should address this problem.
