cause it ain't going outside itself that way, and are you on a dialup 
connection? on a dialup connection, most often (everytime I ever checked) the 
server assigns an IP based on an available pool (dhcp).  a GATEway is a route 
to the outside. if you were to build a door that only went inside the same 
building, you could never leave. kind of an "esher-esque" 2 deminisonal 
concept don't you think?
