If you're using KDE: KDE Control Centre -> LookNFeel -> Desktop ->
Number of Desktops. There is a slider in the upper right corner that
controls the number of desktops.
KDE Control Centre -> LookNFeel -> Background let's you choose a background
color or wallpaper for each desktop.
