Are you using Win95 or '98... if you are you have to set it up so that you enable logins on the Windows machine because if you don't it'll try to login to samba with an invalid user name. It's in the Samba docs, it just not real obvious - this is such a common problem I don't understand why they don't have a specific entry about it.
