that's because it runs a file with the name of the session. these files are located in the xdm or the gdm folder (i don't remember and i'm in windows at the moment). if it doesn't find the file, it runs the default wm which is icewm. what you have to do is to make a script that starts gnome, name it "Gnome" and put it in the gdm folder (/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/gdm , i think).
