Actually it works very well for me.
Yes it scans the DB. I ended up dumping all three CD's onto a separate partition, and redirected the setup to them. The updates via download work fine, provided you've defined your sources. Normally if it's sitting there "doing nothing", it's because RPM itself has failed... You might want to try an "rpm --rebuilddb" and have a cup of coffee. BTW: while it's downloading the progress bar does NOT move! So it can look like it's hung up while it is really downloading the files you wanted.
