I used to run my own email server over uucp and a modem, along with
sendmail back in the 1.2.13 kernel days. If you have someone who
is willing to peer (exchage mail) with you, setting up your own
mail server isn't all that difficult. Domain registration is
helpful, but more importantly, the mail (MX) records need to be set
up so that mail actually goes to your box. Another possibility (which
I use now) is that I set my box to be my IP (static) address, and have
mail go to m206-157.dsl.tsoft.com (my domain / IP address), set my
mail programs to have mail go back to that address, and have postfix
running. Instant mail server :).

DSL is helpful because your machine is 'always on' the net, so that
other machines don't have to do store & forward of your mail.
