What you are is very lucky.

Any pkg. which requires libpng3 is best left alone untill all
pkgs have been rebuilt using it.

Even though you still have libpng2 installed any program that requires
it can at any time now start misbehaving and as you said this is a large list
including nearly all graphical display apps.

Check the cooker archive there are several threads relating to 
problems resulting with libpng3.
