I'm not sure if you could do this, but I'm sure someone will be happy to 
correct me if I'm wrong .. :)

Have you tried typing "kdm" from a prompt?  I believe it's Mandrake's Logon 
Manager, and if you have Gnome installed, then you can select it from the 
list of window managers that you would like to log in to.
