Don't give up :) Try this: _quit_ alsaplayer and _quit_ xmms. In the KDE 
control center -> sound -> sound server under the 'general' tab click
'test sound' (if it works try clicking tree times...). Then start xmms ->
left click in the upper left corner -> options -> preferences ->
select 'OSS driver' as output plugin. Then try playing a wave file. I could
now play a wave file mixed with system sounds by the KDE sound server.
I don't have a SBLive but do use ALSA (which remember has OSS emulation).
