I'm having that same problem myself with my home computer.  I also have a SB 
Live card, and can play MP3's fine thru XMMS or Noatun, but when I tried to 
adjust the volume settings for my card through KDE Sound Mixer, there wasn't 
anything listed there.  Even when I went to create a new tab, I couldn't 
select from anything.  It's kinda like KDE didn't know there was a sound card 
available, but could still play the opening .wav files as well as MP3's .. I 
haven't actually tried to play a MIDI file though.
