Not very likely to be a bash problem. More likely an OpenGL issue (I don't remember if penguin command is OpenGL)
Do you have an Nvidia graphics card? and if so have you installed the nvidia drivers to enable OpenGL? Also if you start the game by typing its name in a terminal window, then when it crashes any error messages will be printed out in the terminal.
