I've seen this one a bunch,not sure it had anything to do with the mouse in 
my case,but video card related,a Rage 128. But to fix it,I did an update an 
chose NOT to start x automatically. I didn't hafta change any resolution 
settings,but it seemed to be the key nonetheless,works great now. It's my 
sons box,I figure a little dip onto the command line will be good for him.

As far as the mouse is concerned,I've had far better luck getting it 
installed during the initial,or on an update rather than thru mousedrake.

Just my experiences,and I've got SO far to go  :-)
