Thanks John, but yes, they were already executable. I played some more and made it work by moving the installation files to another directory. Not sure what difference this made yet, unless the fact that the directory I was trying to install in originally was in an exported tree caused the problem.
Can anybody fill me in on this? Original place was in /home/public/so6beta/ /home/public is the root of an exported tree. Have now moved them to /usr/so6beta and things work. As this is to be a server based install I thought it made sense to put them in an area already NFS mounted.
