I'm not getting at you Stephen, but for the benefit of newbies in general this list does have archives. Almost every question you can think to ask has already been answered. This one gets answered about once a week.
You can find the list archives at http://www.mail-archive.com/[email protected]/ and the expert list archive at http://www.mail-archive.com/[email protected]/ (although the level of discussion on the expert list is not noticeably that much higher than this one) Now to answer your question. After downloading the binary you have to make it executable. You can do that in konqueror by right clicking on the file and selecting permissions. Then in a root terminal type ./binary_file_name /net This will install Star Office in your /usr directory and will make it available to any users on your computer or over a LAN. You may have to tell StarOffice where your Java installation is. You can avoid that if you put :- export JAVA_HOME=/usr/share/java/jre1.3.1_01/ export CLASSPATH=.:$JAVA_HOME/lib athe end of /etc/profile or ~/.bashrc (obviously the directory path should be as appropriate for your system) Star Office claims to have KDE integration but it does not work with Mandrake. You will have to edit the KMenu entries by hand. If you look at /usr/share/soffice6/program (or similar) you will see a number of scripts sagenda scalc sdraw simpress smath soffice Make menu entries in the approriate places for these scripts using Mandrake Control Center (use the system option and the menu entries will appear for all users) If you want icons for these menu entries you will find icons at /usr/share/soffice6/share/kde/icons Copy the large/medium/small/mini icons into /usr/share/icons/large /medium /small /mini respectively. You will then find the icons listed in the Menu editor. Now every time a user selects one of the menu entries for the first time Star office will automatically set up a directory in that users Home Directory and will be configured for that user.
