I would like to set up a home network. I connect to the internet using 1 DSL modem, connected to a switch/hub, which connects 4 computers.
They currently can connect to the internet freely, but cannot connect to each other. Here is what I would like to do, set up a wireless router instead of the current switch/hub (i was looking at the Linksys DSL router). Have one Mandrake desktop physically connected to the wireless router, and have one Mandrake desktop, one Mandrake laptop, and one Windows 2000 laptop connect to the network wirelessly. I would like to be able to do this without having to leave any one of the computers on 24/7. I'm not sure what the pluses and minuses of having an internet gateway are, but it seems so much more convenient for any of the computers to connect to the internet and to any computers in the network that happen to be on, regardless of which other ones are on or off. They will all have their own firewalls anyway. What would you recommend? Do I really need to have a dedicated firewall/internet gateway? If so, what do I need to do next? (after installing an additional NIC for one of the desktops that is.) And if I don't need to have a dedicated firewall/gateway, how can I set up that kind of network? Thanks a lot for you help, everyone. This is going to be a major project for me, and I am very excited. -Paul Rodrguez _________________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!?
