Before you issue 'startx'.. You should run XF86Config (slackware).. xconfigurator (redhat/mandrake?)... or XFDrake (Mandrake).. anyways, you need to configure X before you can run it (properly).. or else you will probably have problems with your mouse/video/etc etc..
