The X respawning thing is because there is something wrong with your video setup. Not necessarily due to the wrong driver, more likely wrong resolution etc.
When the respawning stops log in as root and type init 3 This will stop X trying to start again. Then type XFdrake (It takes a long time to load) You will then be able to reconfigure your video settings. Choose conservative ones you can always change it later.
