John, Based on what I have gleaned from installing Bastille firewalls, it seems that if you have physical access to the console, you should be able to get over the lack of a root password - at least if you haven't taken very specific action to secure against this. Can I suggest you pose this question specifically on the expert list? Having the root password would certainly be a bit useful in these circumstances.
