I changed my append line in /etc/lilo.conf
then ran lilo as root
image=/boot/vmlinuz
label=linux
root=/dev/hda1
append=" devfs=mount nobiospnp"
#append=" nopnpbios devfs=mount quiet"
vga=788
read-only
image=/boot/vmlinuz
label=linux-nonfb
root=/dev/hda1
append=" devfs=mount nobiospnp"
#append=" nopnpbios devfs=mount"
read-only
image=/boot/vmlinuz
label=failsafe
root=/dev/hda1
append=" devfs=mount nobiospnp"
#append=" nopnpbios devfs=mount failsafe"
read-only
