You correct this problem in your XF86Config or Config-4 depending upon
which version of X you are using.
The full path is /etc/X11/XF86Config-4.
Under the Graphics device settings you will find this entry: 

  # Uncomment following option if you see a big white block        
    # instead of the cursor!                                          
    #    Option      "sw_cursor"

Simply change it to this:

 # Uncomment following option if you see a big white block        
    # instead of the cursor!                                          
        Option      "sw_cursor"
