Hello George , your on the right track. You see the above creates the correct 
files and their text entries , after  exiting VI , I cat  the files and the 
new enties are there, but rebooting simply removes them, they disappear,
fstab returns to old text, and lilo.conf is deleted. That is why  they don't 
boot.

so , after the rescue  process and exiting VI , on the rescue /]#  I type 
/sbin/lilo , which returns the symbol  >    as if it wants something more ?

I tried rebooting again, but the same result. So, something is taking over 
after the remedial rescue work and upon rebooting is undoing it all. I guess
this is ment to be so , it is some failsafe precaution system to stop people 
like me messing up. However it also prevents people like me correcting
the problem. 

I guess that there is something wrong with the way I an trying to get the new 
text adopted. I don't think it is to do with my VI editor procedure, that 
seems OK. It's about geting these newly created text and files adopted by the 
system.
