The 2.4.8-34 kernel rpm's should be in the "/mandrake/updates/8.1/RPMS" directory. If they aren't, check another mirror. Other non-mandrake specific kernels are said to work very well. I know plenty of people who use non-mandrake kernels and say they work excellently in Mandrake, but I would recommend you start with the Mandrake ones first as they are much easier to install (RPM's) and known for sure to work. You can find all sorts of non-mandrake tweaked kernel versions at http://www.kernel.org . > I would like to bring my system in line with the various updates available > through software manager/mandrake update & believe I am ready to take the > first step (which seems the most daunting but should truly be the first > step?): installing a newer kernel alongside my current one. Just to clarify (not sure if I understood you correctly, but..) You don't want to use MandrakeUpdate or rpmdrake to upgrade or install a new kernel (good for everything but the kernel). Follow the steps at the following link to do upgrade/install a Mandrake kernel from RPM (pretty easy). http://www.mandrakesecure.net/en/docs/magic.php > > Then I can install the nVidia kernel/glx.
