You are not giving out 'bad' info.

ide-scsi is not supposed to work if using devfs in 8.1, but because devfs itself 'is 
not right' in 8.1 it does work.

(In 8.2 ide zips, to allow write access, are set up during installation as 
hdx=ide-scsi using devfs.) 

When using 8.1 and my drive did not work I never even thought ide=floppy but as habit 
set it as ide=scsi and after creating a fstab and /mnt entry for it I was able to use 
the drive.

We both gave correct and workable answers from our own standpoint, perspective and 
experience. 
Now Andrew has 2 viable alternatives from which he can choose, one of which, also 
hopefully, will give him full access to his ide zip drive.
