heres one other possible answer from a link on mandrakes site:

About getting audio to work under multiple desktop environments.
I have a Sound Blaster PCI 128 (Ensong 1371 driver). Under
Mandrake 7.0, I had several problems with the driver. With Mandrake 7.1,
the installing program installed the correct driver
                                                         the first time.
However, the audio would only work under KDE.
I did find the problem. Two programs, esd and esdplay, are
assigned to owner Audio and Group Audio. Audio appears to be associated
with the KDE environment only. To get the audio
to work under all desktop environments,
I had to change the permissions for the two programs to allow others to
execute them.

Enjoy! Dont' know if it works, I don'thave this problem, except under
gnome. And that WM I'm ready to shoot, throw in the trash & abandon
like an unwanted pair of socks
