kill -9 doesn't always work, regardless of whether or not you are logged on as root or not - and also regardless of whether or not the process is "owned" by another process. Sometimes it doesn't work. On those cases, I usually just reboot mostly because man kill doesn't ever seem to imply that it doesn't work and couldn't find anything about it online. If there's an easier way to do it, please let me know. :)
