Charles, I ran the 'make distclean' prior to 'make xconfig' as you suggested and BAM! ... Working kernel! Thanks! I still have some config issues I'm dealing with but it is very nice to see the 'Uncompressing kernel image ... ' message on boot of my shiney new kernel.
