As it turned out ,
the DVD-ROM was /dev/scd0,while writer was /dev/scd1
I find that going to properies of each icon and manually retyping
seems to give access.

warnings.

Of course I have the usual cdrom and cdrom/writer entries, in LM8.2

Yes, I had already done that, but now that I have ln -s scd0 /dev/dvd
that has stopped too.

I can only thank you all, and especially charles, it has made good,
a little deficiency that needed putting right, but for which I could
find little supporting info.
