What went wrong?

Well, there is an OSS driver called maestro for your sound card. There is
also an ALSA driver called snd-card-es1968. Both drivers are installed on
your hard disk.
If you are curious you can read about those drivers in:
/usr/src/linux-2.4.18-6mdk/Documentation/sound/Maestro and
/usr/src/linux-2.4.18-6mdk/alsa-driver-0.5.12a/INSTALL
if you have the kernel-source RPM installed. You don't have to read those
files though ;)
Can you, as root, 'modprobe maestro'? And do you then get sound? Good luck!
