KDE uses ARTS for sound. When you try to play a sound file with a KDE app, ARTS will grab the sound hardware for itself. After the app has finished ARTS will continue to hold on for a preset period of time. I believe the default timeout is one minute, and that it can be changed in the KDE Control Centre.
