Alex: Take a look at RedHat -- they supported 486's through 7.1, and may still do so in their current version (7.3). I'm still dubious about StarOffice; version 6.0 requires a Pentium with at least 64 mb RAM.
You didn't mention your hard drive. IIRC, 486's were quite limited (540 mb maximum?). That is probably sufficient for a text-only installation, but it will take some discipline. I'm sorry to be a wet blanket, and perhaps you'll succeed, but it's going to take a lot of effort on your part. I had a 486DX4-120 system for a long time, and it was the most stable I've ever had -- even though I was running Windows 3.11 on it.
