Mine was throwing some pretty weird stuff at me too.... I never had a problem there (cause i never tried it... never could get those sound previews to work on KDE... GNOME, find but not KDE but then.. the sound effects themselves work on KDE and not GNOME hmmmmmmm) mine were elsewhere.
Some oddness was causeing my soundcard to !crackle! randomly.. never did quite figure out what that was. i recompiled my kernel for something or another and whatever i changed in make menuconfig fixed it.. most likely i'd chosen the wrong driver for my soundcard, i figure.. or i had something conflicting.
