I tried this as well when i had 7.1. I you read the garbage with a text editor you will see that you are saving the e-mail and the attachment as a file. Hence the mess in Star Office. To solve this use "Save link as" if i recall correctly. Intuition tried to tell me that doing this would only save the URL but it saves the attachment perfectly. You just have to overrule intuition.
